ABYAN — The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) placed the foundation stone of a water project in Lawdar, Abyan governorate, which will benefit over 30,000 people as part of the UAE humanitarian arm’s activities marking “Year of Zayed”.

The project will serve the residents of Lawdar, who were deprived of similar projects over the previous decades.

The first stage of the project, which began on Monday, includes the digging of four wells with a depth of 50 feet, at a total cost of Dh670,000. Its second stage will see the construction of a water transfer line and a large tank with a capacity of 500 cubic litres.

Eng. Saleh Baleedi, Director-General of the Water and Sanitation Institution in Abyan, thanked the ERC, which has supported the local water and sanitation sector and had previously intervened in 2016 to support the water sectors of Zinjibar and Khanfar.

Jihad Hafeedh, Advisor to the Director-General of Lawdar District, said that local people are looking forward to the project’s completion, highlighting its importance to improving the supply and sustainability of drinking water in Lawdar. He also thanked the UAE for launching projects in Lawdar and Abyan Governorate.

Highlighting the scarcity and high price of water in Yemen, Ahmed Qassim Saleh Al Mansouri, Member of the Local Council of Lawdar City, said local people were awaiting the completion of the project.
