Qatar’s glitzy bid to celebrate boycott anniversary slammed

- Mustafa Al Zarooni

dubai — Exactly a year after the boycott, Qatar is quite brazenly and pompously celebrating the occasion without any visible signs of change in its deviant behaviour. The Quartet — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt — is determined to enforce the boycott until Qatar stops funding terror groups to destablise the neighbouring GCC and Arab nations.

According to Bahraini writer Sawsan Al Shaaer, the rulers in Doha are splurging tonnes of money to create a media hype on the occasion of the anniversary of the boycott. The plan includes hosting elaborate TV and Press interviews, talk shows, documentaries and planting news in local and foreign newspapers.

Qatar has no option but to rely on media to misrepresent facts, the Bahraini writer said and pointed out Doha will work overtime to destroy any Arab or Islamic coalition that is led by Saudi Arabia, or any philanthropic work led by the UAE.

The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Anwar Gargash, said on Twitter that he was informed by a Western journalist that paid Press delegations have landed in Doha to mark one year of the boycott. “Stay as you are”, Dr Gargash said, adding that the Gulf crisis is not yet over since Qatar failed to address the reasons for the crisis.

Back in 2014, Amir of Qatar Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad signed the Riyadh agreement on non-interference in the domestic affairs.

This agreement clearly states if the provisions are breached by any member, other GCC states have the right to take action. Therefore, the decision by the Quartet to sever ties with Qatar on June 5, 2017, is in line with the 2014 agreement and is perfectly legal.
