dubai — A security guard working for a firm - specialised in securing the transportation of funds - has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance with robbing more than Dh5 million belonging to two clients.

The 39-year-old Kenyan security guard, who was assigned with securing the transportation of funds all the way till their deposit at bank ATMs, allegedly abused his post and stole the Dh5,090,171 belonging to two money exchange offices.

A 30-year-old female security guard at a gym, also Kenyan, believed to be the mastermind behind the robbery, is accused of aiding and abetting him.

According to the public prosecution records, she picked up the money box from the prime accused at the parking lot of a shopping centre in Deira and he later caught up with her to split the cash. She got Dh3 million out of it. Consequently, they both caused intentional damage to the security firm and its interests and those of its clients as well.

Another Kenyan security guard, 30, has been charged in the same case with possessing part of the stolen funds.

Only the prime accused was detained. His two accomplices are standing trial in absentia as they are on the loose.

The case unfolded between March 3 and March 20 and was registered at Al Muraqqabat police station.

The prime defendant had been working for the security firm for about six years. He said he had met the female accomplice about six months

She suggested to me the robbery plan after learning from me that I handle an average of Dh30-50 million a day.”

prior to the robbery. He would often go to the gym, where she worked, to collect funds to deposit them at the bank. She would usually be curious about the funds he handled daily. “She suggested to me the robbery plan after learning from me that I handle an average of Dh30-50 million a day,” the security guard said during investigation. The plan was to embezzle the funds rather than hand them over to the firm or deposit them at ATMs.

“She suggested I stole one of the cash boxes without letting my colleagues notice it.” They set March 4 as the day to execute the theft plan. On that day, the security staff collected Dh17 million from a money exchange main branch in Deira and then went to a shopping centre in the same area. One box contained Dh5 million, which the guard stole. While his colleagues went to collect funds from outlets at the centre, the prime accused called his woman accomplice and met her at the car park of the same centre where he gave her the Dh5 million he kept in a briefcase. They later stole Dh90,171 which belonged to another money exchange office.

He said he kept some of the money with the third defendant at his place in Al Hamriyah area even as the latter relocated to Sharjah. The latter disappeared later. The woman accomplice had told him about her intention to travel back home.
