abu dhabi — More than 2,965 motorists in the Capital were fined in the last five months for reckless driving and speeding at 200kmph, the Abu Dhabi Police revealed on Thursday.

The police said the drivers were speeding at over 200kmph on internal and external roads in the emirate.

Authorities are urged motorists, particularly young drivers, to abide by the traffic rules, adding that speeding resulted to around eight per cent of serious accidents in the first half of this year.

Moreover, the police said young drivers have been responsible for 46 per cent of traffic accidents this year alone.

“In 2017, we focused heavily on raising traffic safety awareness to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities. That is what we will continue to do,” said the Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, director of Abu Dhabi Police’s Central Operations Sector.

Officials warned of the dangerous consequences of driving at high speeds, pointing out that speeding can lead to the lack of the driver’s ability to control the vehicle, resulting in serious accidents, injuries and fatalities.

The police said there are tighter controls on Abu Dhabi roads through radars to monitor reckless drivers, and those caught violating Article (34) where the maximum speed limit exceeded by more than 80kmph, will receive a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points and the confiscation of the vehicle for 60 days.
