Sharjah, Ajman cops step up vigil as residents leave for holidays

- Afkar Abdullah

sharjah/ajman — Your home is most vulnerable to thefts when you are away on a vacation during the long summer break. And to secure its safety, the Sharjah and Ajman Police have stepped up measures to prevent robbers from trying to sneak into your flat.

Police security patrols will be deployed 24x7 at residential areas so that these neighbourhoods don’t become soft targets for the burglars. The Sharjah Police have launched a free security service that the house owners may avail.

As a precaution, the police officials have called on people going on holidays to make sure they do not leave servants at home or let them get a wind of the valuables kept inside.

An official cautioned that residents travelling overseas for long periods should not risk keeping precious items in their apartments, which may be subject to thefts during their absence. It is during the summer holiday season that most cases of burglaries have been reported, he said, adding the vacation could turn sour for many after they find out what they have lost.

Brigadier Mohamed Rashid Bayat, director of the police operations in Sharjah, said preventive measures stress the importance of neighbour’s role in ensuring the safety of the entire premises. The neighbour should report any suspicious activity which could be a burglary bid, he pointed out.

Brigadier Bayat said the Sharjah Police are currently giving priority to the safety of residents’ homes because robbers have a field day when the occupants are absent.

“We are offering our security service to residents of villas who make a request to us to keep their homes safe while they are on holiday and it’s free of charge.

“People interested in availing this service should log into the police website www.shjpolice.gov.ae or through the customer service of the Sharjah Police centers or send a fax to 06-5487700. They can also call on 0527007999.”

The registration for the service/ programme -— Together for safety of your home — on Ministry of Interior (MoI) website will close on July 30. Due to the intensified

awareness campaign, a large number of residents in Sharjah have already started registering for the programme.

Col Faisal Bin Nassar, deputy director of CID at Sharjah Police, said there has been an overwhelming response to the programme. He urged the residents of Sharjah to register in the programme by following instructions. After the registration, the police will contact the applicants to inform them about the measures to be taken before departure.

Meanwhile, in Ajman too, the police authorities have launched a security campaign — Home safety while on vacation — aiming to educate vacationers about the necessary measures needed to protect their house from thefts.

Lt Col Ali Jaber Al Shamsi, director of police stations at Ajman Police, said thefts targeting homes go up in summer, as burglars know that many owners leave valuables inside their apartments. He added

He added that the police have asked people to be wary when they go on vacation, while directing them to take adequate steps so their home’s security is not compromised. The police have also enhanced patrols in places which could be targeted the most, after undertaking a comprehensive study. The police will show zero tolerance to people who commit thefts by breaking into homes, the director underlined.
