abu dhabi — Unfit tyres have caused a total of 17 traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in 20 minor injuries, three major injuries and four deaths in 2017, the Abu Dhabi Police revealed on Wednesday.

The police also revealed that around 28,727 drivers were fined last year for violating tyre safety requirements.

A police official told Khaleej Times that drivers must examine their tyres and ensure they are safe and secure before going on the roads.

“Unfit tyres can be a grave danger on our roads. This can cause serious traffic accidents, which could result in serious injuries and loss of lives, as four people lost their lives last year, due to this preventable measure,” added the official. He warned that those driving with invalid tyres will receive a fine of Dh500 dirhams, four black points and have their vehicle confiscated for one week.

The Abu Dhabi Police also posted warnings on their social media platforms about regular vehicle inspections and maintenance, including an initiative dubbed: ‘Dear driver, ensure your vehicle is regularly maintained and your tires are checked before travelling.’

Moreover, in a Press release on Wednesday, the director of traffic and patrols directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations Sector, Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaili, warned that tyres are more at risk of exploding during summer.
