UAE slams attack on Saudi security checkpoint

abu dhabi — The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the terrorist attack targeting a security checkpoint in the Buraidah District of the Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia.

A member of Saudi Arabia’s security forces and a foreign citizen were killed in the attack. Two attackers were also killed in the ensuing shootout.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Internatio­nal Cooperatio­n said that the UAE strongly condemns these criminal acts that threaten internatio­nal security and stability.

The ministry also reiterated its persistent and principled position against all forms and manifestat­ions of terrorism that target all, regardless of their religion and race.

The ministry expressed the UAE’s condolence­s and solace to the government and the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as to the families of those killed.

According to AFP, a drive-by shooting against a checkpoint in central Saudi Arabia and an ensuing gunfight on Sunday left a security officer, a Bangladesh­i civilian and two attackers dead, the kingdom’s interior ministry said.

“A security checkpoint on the Buraydah-Tarfiyah road in Qassim region came under fire from three terrorists riding in a vehicle on Sunday afternoon,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Two of the terrorists were killed and a third was wounded and transferre­d to hospital,” it added.

Sergeant Suleiman Abdelaziz Abdel Latif was named as the Saudi fatality. The ministry said a Bangladesh­i resident was also killed, but did not announce his name. The authoritie­s said a criminal investigat­ion has been launched into the attack.

Four Saudi policemen were killed and four others wounded on April 20 in an attack targeting a checkpoint in the southweste­rn province of Asir. —
