Motorist caught speeding at 254kmph

sharjah — A Sharjah radar clocked a motorist driving at 254kmph, a top Sharjah Police officer has revealed. This was the top speed violation recorded in the emirate in the first six months of the year.

A radar on the Sheikh Khalifa Road, which has a speed limit of 80kmph, recorded the violation by a 4WD vehicle as it sped towards Fujairah.

Colonel Saud Al Shaibah, director of awareness department at the Sharjah traffic and patrol department, said the motorist’s licence would be suspended for a year. The speed limit on the road had recently been amended.

According to the federal traffic law, exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 80kmph is punishable with a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points and confiscation of the vehicle for 60 days.

The police have recorded several other violations of speedsters driving at over 200kmph.

Col Al Shaibah said such violations pose a “great danger” to the safety on the roads. He said the police recently organised many traffic inspection campaigns, targeting roads that witness the maximum traffic violations.

“Such reckless actions endanger the lives of road users and often result in deaths, injuries and loss of properties. Several people were killed due to speeding and inattentive driving in the past two years,” said Col Al Shaibah.

He urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to the stipulated speed limits, stay focused on the road and maintain a safe distance behind other vehicles.
