Solo tripS made eaSy: a checkliSt
Young adults today are all about exploring the world — on trips with a few good friends, or as is often the case, entirely alone. It is a sort of second coming-of-age experience — a journey that assures an individual that they can ‘adult’ on their own. And, while a trip abroad nowadays assures most of the modern conveniences of life found at home, there are key things to be aware of before taking on a solo adventure.
> Ensure that both your passport and UAE visa are valid for the next six months.
> Check if you need a visa to get to your intended destination. If you do, apply for one a few months ahead of time.
> Apart from scouring the Internet for the best deals, research your destination before you go — even if you don’t plan to do much apart from ‘chilling’. It’s best to know what to expect or prepare for as a tourist.
> Be sure someone — at least one trusted friend or family member — is aware of your plans and can be contacted in case of an emergency.
> When jet-setting alone especially, it’s advisable to opt for travel insurance when booking your flights.
> Have safety concerns or wonder if you’ll enjoy your adventure as much on your own? Choose a tour package — this way, you have most of the itinerary sorted out already while giving you the space to roam around by yourself too. It’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends.
> Carry some cash with you — in the local currency of the destination country or US dollars. Don’t wait to go to the currency exchange after your vacation begins or solely depend on plastic and e-payments.
> Try not to go “off the grid” when going abroad alone — get a roaming data plan or a SIM card for your holiday destination.
> Travel light — here’s a basic rule to follow: don’t pack more than you can carry yourself. Leave room for goodies and souvenirs.
> Always keep your hotel or boarding address and other contact details with you when out and about. Also, save a few location maps (or download offline maps) of areas that you plan to visit.
