dubai — A Briton, on trial on two counts of assaulting police officers, has been sentenced to one year in jail by a Dubai court. He will be deported after completing his jail time as per the court order.

Prosecutors accused the 26-year-old visitor of assaulting two on-duty police officers, while he was drunk, in Al Barsha area on May 3.

He faced charges of assaulting the police officers and consuming alcohol without a licence at the Court of First Instance, where he claimed he could not recall the incident.

A police sergeant said he was on patrol duty with a colleague at 3am when they were alerted by the operation room about a situation involving a drunk man outside a hotel in JBR.

“We reached the place and found a European man behaving erratically. He looked very drunk. We checked his ID and then handcuffed him and took him into custody.”

The corporal told the prosecutor that as they were about to take the man out of the car later, he hit him with his head on the nose. “He also slapped my colleague on the head,” the officer recounted.

Both officers visited a hospital and got checked up on the same day. Their medical examination reports were enclosed to the case file.

During investigation, the Dubai visitor admitted to the alcohol charge. The court ruling may be appealed by the defendant and the public prosecution.
