ABU DHABI — Six people, including an elderly man, were injured after a minibus carrying 14 workers overturned at the ICAD camp bridge in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi Police said the bus was heading towards the city while the rear tyre of the bus was burst, causing it to overturn. The injured were immediately taken to Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi by the air ambulance.

Brigadier-General Ahmed Abdullah Al Shehhi, deputy director of the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at the Abu Dhabi Police, urged motorists to check the condition of the tyres of their vehicles to avoid traffic accidents.

Major Abdullah Al Qubaisi, head of the traffic control department at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said that preliminary investigations revealed that a faulty tyre of the vehicle caused the accident.

In July, officials revealed that unfit tyres have caused a total of 17 traffic accidents, which resulted in four deaths and 20 injuries, including three major injuries.

The Abu Dhabi Police also revealed that around 28,727 drivers were fined last year for violating tyre safety requirements.

The Abu Dhabi Police recently posted warnings on their social media platforms about the importance of regular vehicle inspections and maintenance, including an initiative dubbed: ‘Dear driver, ensure your vehicle is regularly maintained and your tyres are checked before travelling’. A police official told Khaleej

Times that driving with unfit tyres has led to major road accidents in the Capital.

“Unfit tyres have led to some serious traffic accidents, and many families were affected by losing loved ones to something that could have been prevented,” he added.
