dubai — Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum, the leader of the UAE show jumping team at the Asian Games, said the UAE riders were ready to deliver for their country in the continent’s biggest sporting event, a press release from the UAE National Olympic Committee said.

She noted that preparations were promising and there was an air of optimism about the team. “It is imperative that athletes have to seek to translate the support of our sports leaders into achievements in all disciplines and not only equestrian. Despite the strong show jumping teams taking part in these games, the UAE riders are determined to make a decent show,” she said.

“The preparations of riders were good. The strict sports programme I have set for myself was intense and included several European countries. The climate in those countries is good for horses; which reflects positively on preparations as well as the technical and physical readiness of horses,” added Latifa.

“Training in Jakarta continued in the morning and evening as part of a programme to step up the readiness of horses for the show jumping events which require early and specific preparations. The training camp in Europe included participating in competitions and not just daily training sessions.

“The competitive spirit contributes to maintaining the form of horses and competitors in this game are very strong. Despite the unexpected hot conditions, the organisation is extremely fine and professional. The opening ceremony was great, and the atmosphere is conducive to fine sports competition,” explained Latifa.

Meanwhile, Taekwondo player Hasan Shibr crashed out of the Games after losing against a Taiwanese player. He won his opener against a Yemeni player and qualified for the second round before losing his last match.

Despite leaving the Games, Hasan stated that he benefited from the participation and coach Al Mazami praised his performance, especially in the first round.
