dubai — A man was charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he physically hurt an on-duty traffic police officer by not complying with his order to give himself in and be taken into custody.

According to public prosecution records, the 26-year-old unemployed Emirati man slammed his car door on the police officer’s hand as the latter tried to arrest him. He also ran over the officer’s foot when he drove off. The incident took place on June 12 in Al Qusais.

The police officer said he was on the job at 8.40am when he spotted the defendant driving in the wrong way in Al Nahda. “I checked the plate number of his car and found its registration had expired for about a year and it belonged to a rental office. I stopped him and asked for his papers. He claimed to me that he had reported his driving licence as lost at Al Muraqqabat police station.

“He looked tense as he showed me his Emirates ID. After I found syringes in the passenger seat, I told him to step off the car but he could not walk straight. I then checked his status and found he had a criminal record. There was a pending jail sentence he had to serve.”

The accused would not go with the officer and told him he had to go home as his family was waiting for him. He sat behind the wheel and drove off while the officer was still there. The door consequently slammed on the officer’s hand.

“As I was still grabbing the door, I was pulled about 70 metres. As I

tried to free my hand, I fell down and my right foot was run over by the defendant’s car,” the policeman said, adding that he chased the accused and blocked his way, waiting for back-up. The defendant tried to flee the scene but was arrested by the police.

The complainant went later for medical examination. He suffered hand injuries, thigh pain, bruises and scratches. He told the prosecutor he was wearing the uniform on the day of the incident.

During investigation, the defendant justified his running away from the cop as he wanted to spend Eid Al Fitr with his family.

The trial continues on September 19.
