The depressed need support from family, friends

- Chavi Khattar

Iam a student and would like to draw attention to a common, yet dangerous issue — suicide. suicide or ending one’s life is a tragic event with strong emotional repercussions for its survivors and families of victims. as per statistics, on an average, over 123 suicides are attempted each day, and this is scary.

thousands of people risk their lives for silly reasons. a look at social media reveals the large number of teens talking about death or killing themselves. we may dismiss such talk as being dramatic. but, why are such thoughts surfacing in the first place? i feel they should be taken seriously. i agree that all those who have such thoughts may not commit suicide, but surely they are people who need support. maybe their families do not support them. a child who doesn’t receive family support can feel isolated and suicide becomes the only option. another reason could be the sexual orientation and lack of support on the issue. most important of all, it could be grades, too. they could feel guilty for scoring less marks and can think of suicide as the only option.

suicide or depression is a quiet crisis, but people can come out of it by talking about their problems and anxieties. people, especially teens, need support and the attention of adults. more importantly, they need help to keep themselves away from such thoughts. and i feel it is the responsibility of every family and every school to provide that support.
