abu dhabi — An Emirati woman working for a government department has landed in trouble for using her husband’s documents to obtain free housing from her employer. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the husband filed a complaint against his wife for using his passport, Emirates ID copies and other documents to obtain the property certificate from the Abu Dhabi Municipality without his consent.

The Emirati man said his wife had presented the documents to the municipality to obtain the property certificate so she could get a house from her workplace and lease it out.

The husband had demanded the wife be punished and also pay him Dh21,000 as temporary compensation. Prosecutors charged the woman with illegal use of her husband’s documents for personal gains.

The wife’s lawyer told the court that his client works for a public department and wanted to renew her property lease with the government department that employs her. “The Abu Dhabi Municipality, however, asked her for a property certificate.

“My client then went to the municipality to get the certificate, proving that she did not own any property in Abu Dhabi. The municipality employee asked her for a copy of her husband’s ID and passport, which she got from their home and submitted.”

The lawyer said his client was “surprised” when she learnt that her husband had filed a criminal case against her because she used his documents. The lawyer argued that his client provided copies of the ID and passport because the man was her husband. There was no criminal motive in doing so, he said. The trial was adjourned until October 10.
