sharjah — Prisoners at the punitive centres in Sharjah will soon be provided with bar-coded smart wristbands, that will help authorities to access their details and track their movements inside the jail easily.

Speaking to Khaleej Times Brig. Ahmed Abdulaziz Shuhail, director-general of Sharjah Reformatory and punitive Establishments (SRPE), said that the smart bracelet system, considered first of its kind in the region, is designed to facilitate electronically access their information related to personal identifications, health records, attendance, and legal case.

“It will be operational very soon, as they are working on setting it up and entering the information of the prisoners,” he added.

Every inmate will be wearing the ‘smart bracelet’ in his /her wrist, which is equipped with a barcode that will carry an integrated database of each prisoner, including date of court proceedings, penalty, and the crime they committed. It will be linked to a smart screen, which is installed in a specialised room with a tracking system.

The tracking system is designed to determine the movements and the places where he or she are allowed. Inmates can also access doors of their allowed areas, such as food area, or sports courts, clinic and all services areas within the facility. It will alert also police guards if an inmate attempts to escape using unauthorised doors.

Brig. Suhail added that the smart bracelet barcode can also be used in bank transactions to withdraw maximum Dh500 deposited in their account by the families. “By using its barcode it will show the picture of the inmate and his number.”

He explained that the wristband screen will display a number of options including, complaints and inquiries, family visit requests and medical services.

The SRPE, under the Sharjah Police, functions in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of the Interior (MoI) and aims at implementing artificial intelligence-based electronic services in all its facilities, according to Brig. Suhail.

The system is designed to facilitate electronically access prisoners’ information related to personal identifications, health records, attendance, and the crime they committed.”
