#MeToo movement should be about justice for all women

- RAMACHANDRAN NAIR

This refers to the editorial, We salute Indian women for their #MeToo campaign (October 11). It iss certainly an eye-opener for the younger generation. However, the voices of women did not start recently though one cannot deny that technology helped them reach a wider audience. While women gaining support from all quarters is a good sign this campaign must not turn into a witch-hunt.

Now, restrictions don’t exist between the two genders. There are female movie-makers, CEOs and females heading educational institutions. The presence of women across various industries brings in transparency and confidence, irrespective of their age and calibre. But what surprises me most is why such allegations are being revealed now.

Since the common man and woman have access to social media, the virtual world is being used by many people to settle scores and cast aspersions on character.

However, a transition in the thinking of all Indian women will take more time since they still have faith in their traditions. The #MeToo campaign is certainly going to damage the name of several icons from all fields of work where women too have proven to be indispensable.

The men would never have realised the repercussions of mistreating women and the #MeToo campaign is just the beginning of a global change in mindsets. The bishop’s case in Kerala was a true example. Even though the revelations by several individuals made headlines, they should never be silenced until they are settled by the courts and justice is done. Men should surely be more vigilant as a case may come up after several years, perhaps with video and voice.

Women’s empowerment should continue in all walks of life. Awareness workshops must be held and the movement must extend to all women and girls. Yet, what happens to those millions who have no access to social media forums? Who will help them reveal their concerns and name those who harassed them? It is now time for governments to step in.
