dubai — Saeed Rashid Obaid Saif Al Zaabi, Ambassador of the UAE to Argentina, has welcomed the UAE NOC delegation, headed by Talal Al Shanqeeti, Acting Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee, on the sidelines of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, according to a press release on Thursday.
Mohammed bin Darwish, the Executive Director of the National Olympic Committee, attended the reception. Shanqeeti and Darwish have extended their deepest appreciation to Al Zaabi for his continuous support for the UAE NOC delegation and taking care of all their concerns.
Shanqeeti presented the UAE NOC trophy to Al Zaabi as a gesture of appreciation for supporting the UAE Sport.
“The participation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Montasir Al Qassimi and May Al Madani in the 3rd Youth Olympic Games are historic for UAE weightlifting. It is the first time for the UAE men and women to participate in the Youth Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) implemented the principle of gender equality in this Games,” said Redha Ayyashi, UAE weightlifting coach.
“We were greatly heartened by the participation of Montasir and Al Madani in the Youth Olympic Games. The number of participants in the weightlifting competitions reached 95, of whom two were from the UAE. We have adopted a short and medium-term plan in preparation for Tokyo 2020 and a long-term plan for Paris 2024. Therefore, we hope that 2018 YOG is a starting point for our athletes for the upcoming Olympic and international events,” he added.
“The 3rd YOG hosts the best weightlifting athletes, especially from Asia. We hope to finish amongst the top six in the 2018 YOG, considering the high-level of the UAE weightlifters, on whom we pin high hopes to achieve the best results in Tokyo 2020 and 2022 YOG in Senegal.
