Would you let a robot do your car testing?
dubai — The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a Smart Inspection Robot that will soon conduct vehicle testing in Dubai.
Jamal Al Sadah, RTA director of vehicle licensing department, told Khaleej Times that the five-foot robot is locally made and customised for the requirements of the RTA.
“The smart robot has a dual function: it will be used for vehicle registration and it can also detect vehicle defects. It has a plug that will be connected to the computer box of the vehicle and the robot will run diagnostics with high quality and accuracy,” Al Sadah explained.
“At the moment, the smart robot is on a proof-of-concept phase, but soon there will be no need for the owner to bring the car to the service centre because we will be deploying the smart inspection robots,” he added.
“The smart inspection robot will also run an OBD (onboard diagnostics) to give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle subsystems,” Al Sadah noted.
The smart robot will also send the relevant information to the RTA prior to vehicle inspection.
Moreover, human inspectors will soon be wearing Smart Vehicle Inspection Glasses to collect all information during the vehicle inspection process. The pair of smart glasses is equipped with the latest augmented-reality technology that will render manual inspection obsolete, the RTA said.
