Britain should back May’s efforts

Theresa May’s Brexit problem won’t go away however hard she tries to make it appealing to the British masses. That may be an understatement, but we can’t help feeling sorry for the PM who is doing her best under trying circumstances. Why blame her when she was left holding the baby after the country voted to exit the European Union two years ago. Her predecessor David Cameron didn’t see it coming, but when it did, he simply walked into the sunset taking moral responsibility. The truth is this: Brexit has become a mountain to climb for the PM — with a millstone around her neck. Simply walking away from Europe is complicated because she has found little support from her cabinet members who threaten to go rogue only to chicken out. They lack the stomach for another election despite May showing nerves of steel throughout the Brexit storm. Damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t — her predicament is unique — and embarrassing for Britain. British politics is at its lowest ebb in recent years.

One Tory backbencher who preferred anonymity said: “The moment is coming when the knife gets heated, stuck in her front and twisted. She’ll be dead soon.” May was also asked to “bring her own noose” to a meeting. It’s getting downright dirty and personal. Worse, Labour is calling for a second referendum and brought thousands out on the streets of London in what appeared to be Mayor Sadiq Khan’s coming-out party in his feud with party chief Jeremy Corbyn. Through the tumult May has soldiered on and is closer to a deal than we thought. According to reports, 95 per cent is done, but the question of the two Irelands and the border with Europe remains. Under Brexit, London can tighten border controls — a soft border for 20 years was a compromise to civil strife. PM May has got this far and her efforts must be supported by all Britons. There is no alternative — a better deal is better than a bad deal or no deal at all.
