riyadh — UAE attacking midfielder Omar Abdulrahman may need to undergo surgical intervention for a ruptured cruciate ligament on his right knee and the star has shown preference for the same hospital in Barcelona, Spain where he underwent surgery for his knee injury in 2014.

Amoori, as he is fondly called, suffered the injury while playing for Al Hilal against Al Shabab during a Saudi League match on Saturday.

According to Arabic media in Saudi Arabia, a scan on Tuesday has revealed that the former Al Ain star will need surgery on his right knee.

Omar, who joined the Riyadh giants in August on a one-year loan deal, was carried off after 12 minutes when he collided with Romanian defender Valerica Garman at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium. At the time, he appeared to be in considerable pain after stretching to reach the ball in the Al Shabab area.

An Al Hilal official told Saudi daily Arab News that the player’s national team (UAE) had expressed concern with the 2019 Asian Cup kicking off in early January. “We have already talked to the UAE FA but we will have to wait and see,” the official was quoted as saying.

Omar is a key member of the UAE squad and after this latest injury to Amoori, Alberto Zaccheroni must be a worried man.

The UAE star bagged the 2016 Asian player of the year and was in great form after his loan move to Al Hilal this summer. He even scored in UAE’s 1-1 draw against Honduras in Barcelona on October 11.

Omar will certainly miss UAE’s next national training camp in November when the squad reconvenes in Dubai to continue their preparations for the Asian Cup. Marwan bin Ghalita, president of the UAE Football Association, appreciated the initiative of Turki Al Sheikh, chairman of Saudi Sports General Authority, for asking Al Hilal Club to treat Omar Abdulrahman in the best hospitals in the world for his latest the injury.
