SHARJAH — His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has earmarked Dh4.5million for the purchase of new books and publications for the emirate’s public and government libraries.
All the new titles of various languages and genres — from Arabic books to international literature and scientific publications — will be bought from the 37th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), expressing the ruler’s support for the publishing industry and his commitment to nurturing knowledge and culture.
Sheikh Sultan’s directives aimed to ensure that Sharjah’s libraries are always equipped with the latest releases of Arabic and international publishing houses. A go-to resource hub for researchers, scholars, experts, and students in the country, the emirate’s libraries boast a wide collection of publications, and aside from books, they also have some of the best periodicals and bulletins, among other sources of information. Most of them have been bought from the SIBF and other exhibitions in the UAE and abroad, in addition to direct acquisition from publishing houses and commercial libraries.
Sharjah government institutions have set up special libraries for their employees, who are also given reading hours. —
