UAE gains ITU Council membership
dubai — The UAE was elected as a member of the International Telecommunications Union, ITU, Council for the fourth consecutive term. Member states at the 20th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference on Monday completed the election process for the ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board for the 20192022 period. The UAE garnered 164 votes, and was elected as member in the ITU Membership ‘Region E - Asia and Australasia’, which contains a total of 13 seats. The Conference is currently taking place in Dubai, and will conclude on November 16.
Member countries alongside of the UAE in the ‘Region E’ grouping include, Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.
Over the years, the UAE has witnessed an increase in the number of votes, reflecting the high level of confidence ITU member countries have in the UAE’s telecommunications sector.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA, directorgeneral Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, said that the UAE’s election to the ITU Council reaffirms the pioneering role played by the nation in shaping the future of the telecommunications sector.
He noted that the UAE is a key player in international forums, and is actively contributing to the development of policies and strategies to make the world a better and safer place, by ensuring security, stability and prosperity globally.
