sharjah — Hundreds of visitors have been thronging the Sharjah Events stand to get their names painted in — the characters used in Japanese writing — by Emirati artist Amna Darmaki.

The ‘Japanese Artworks by Emirati Hands’ falls in line with the theme of the 37th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), celebrating Japan as the guest of honour and recognising the country’s iconic cultural status.

The Sharjah Events stand has become a platform for Darmaki to interact with visitors who have lauded her mastery of the Japanese language and script.

Hessa Al Hammadi, manager of the government communication department at the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), said the bureau supports not only the emerging Emirati talent but also the cultural exchange between the UAE and ancient, heritage-rich civilisations like Japan.

Young talents who have been at the stand never failed to amaze the crowds at the fair during book breaks, and according to Al Hammadi, the bureau has always encouraged these new talents to showcase their work.

The SGMB initiative is open to visitors on Thursday and Friday (Nov 8 and 9) from 6pm to 8pm at the SIBF.

The Sharjah Events, in particular, is a website dedicated to everything happening in the emirate — events, conferences and social, cultural, economic and sports activities — throughout the year. It also offers a host of services, including weather updates, prayer timings, and an interactive map of all activities and attractions in Sharjah.
