Force India surprised as Haas files protest

- Ashwani Kumar

abu dhabi — There’s something not right at Force India. Even as dust hasn’t settled on Esteban Ocon-Max Verstappen clash, rival Haas has lodged a protest against the team.

It is understood that Haas alleges Force India over construction and design of this year’s race car. The FIA in a note informed that stewards had conducted the hearing on the protest.

“A substantial amount of written evidence was submitted and each party made extensive verbal representation. The stewards are deliberating on the matter,” the FIA note said after two hearings on the issue.

A decision is not anticipated to be handed down before the third free practice session of the Etihad Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon.

However, Force India team principal Otmar Szafnauer said the issue will be put to bed soon. “Well after the protest was lodged it wasn’t a surprise at all. But just before that we weren’t expecting it really, so a bit of a surprise, but in a way it’s good that all of the information can be presented to the stewards and in due course I think they’ll make a very informed decision.”

Force India had new ownership in August and lost all earned points in first 12 races. However, in eight races from the Belgium Grand Prix, Racing Point Force India has won 48 points.

Force India sit seventh on constructor’s championship behind McLaren with 62 points. The competition is tight as Sauber Ferrari (42) and Toro Rosso (33) follow closely behind.

Force India, Otmar, said will surprise the field in Abu Dhabi.
