abu dhabi — After a gap of eight years, Robert Kubica will be back in Formula One with Williams.

The Polish driver survived a life-threatening rally crash in 2011 but the incident affected his career. After a long break, he returned to the racing scene and tested for Williams after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2017. Earlier this year he was named the reserve driver at Williams and now he will partner George Russell in 2019.

“It is a big honour for me to get back to Formula One again. I will try to give my best. This was a long wait. I wasn’t racing a lot but doing testing. Finally I am back in the front grid. This is a big challenge for sure. This is what I was working for. Now it is just a question of preparing as much as we can. Hopefully new car will be better than this one,” he said.

The 33-year-old said that it’s too early to set any goals and expectations for next year but the preparations start with tests at Yas Marina Circuit next week.

“Ahead of the next year, we hope to do our important job, which starts on Tuesday with testing and evaluating new Pirelli tyres and approach. It is going to be a crucial test and we are going to focus on this. We have try and collect as much information. Of course the cars will be difficult next year but tyres are crucial. So we have a crucial session coming,” Kubica said.

He added that the team is very focused on improving next season. “We have got a solid programme. We have to focus on work. Hopefully we will be competitive.”
