NAB rejects allegations regarding torture cells

-

islamabad — The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has strongly rejected the baseless allegations regarding presence of torture cells in its prisons and said it presented every accused before the court for getting their remand according to the law.

A NAB spokesman said no one has complained of torture, neither called their prison a torture cell nor made a demand for a medical examination, said a Press release isued on Friday.

The NAB investigated every accused on scientific basis, preserved their self-respect and acted according to law, it said.

All reports about torture and torture cells were part of an organised propaganda campaign to stop the NAB from taking legal action against the corrupt, the spokesman said, adding that the NAB was working independently without any pressure as it believed in the policy of non-violence.

He said there was no need for torture during investigations of any white-collar crime as such cases needed documentary evidence.

A few days back NAB chairman retired justice Javed Iqbal visited the bureau’s Lahore office where he inspected the jail and issued instructions that the accused should be given facilities in addition to facilities prescribed in the jail manual. Later, the NAB hired a doctor on a full-time basis and medicines were managed immediately on the advice of the doctor.

The NAB warned that criticism against the bureau should be avoided as it was not an institution of an individual but of a nation and baseless allegations could damage its reputation. —
