dubai — The Sikh community in Dubai is gearing up for yearlong community service activities in celebration of Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary next year, Surender Singh Kandhari, head of Guru Nanak Darbar, has announced.
In a recent celebration attended by 60,000 devotees, Kandhari announced that the Sikh worship centre has planned activities for every month from December until November 23, 2019, which is the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikhism founder Guru Nanak.
Kandhari told Khaleej Times: “A blood donation camp is scheduled on December 28 wherein 500 volunteers have confirmed participation. Other planned activities on the succeeding months include an overnight, non-stop kirtan (prayers), inter-faith gathering, a literary conference of Guru Nanak Devji’s teachings, and distribution of food packs to labour camps.
“We will also organise programmes exclusively for the elderly, children and women, as well as a medical camp for bluecollar workers and Diwali and Dussehra cultural programmes.”
Ahead of the celebrations, Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Dubai had also put together a joint outreach programme in collaboration with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Abu Dhabi.
“For the fourth year of the cooperation, food packs that include rice, lentils and sugar were distributed to blue-collar workers as a humanitarian initiative and as part of the 2018 Tolerance Day celebrations,” Kandhari said.
Vipul, Consul-General of India in Dubai, affirmed that the consulate and Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara Dubai have been closely working together in serving the community.
