Two drunk waiters jailed, fined for murder attempt

dubai — Two Filipino men, charged with premeditated attempted murder after they tried to kill a compatriot, were sentenced on Tuesday by a Dubai court.
The Court of First Instance earlier heard how the two men, both waiters (aged 32 and 33), sought to finish the victim off on May 20. While one of them cornered him, the other brought a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the shoulder and abdomen. They were both under the influence of alcohol then.
The court found them guilty of the charges of attempted murder and consuming alcohol without a licence. It sentenced the main defendant — the stabber — to one year in jail and fined him Dh 5,000, to be followed by deportation. The other accused received a three-month imprisonment sentence, a Dh2,000 fine and a deportation order.
The court referred the duo to the Court of Misdemeanors on the charge of drinking alcohol without a permit.
The victim told the public prosecution investigators that he had friends visiting him that night. “They left at 4am, but returned to tell me that two men – the accused — assaulted one of them. I went out to check what was going on. I followed the pair to the fourth floor.”
He recounted how he witnessed them assaulting his friend again. “They turned to me when I stepped in to get them away from my friend. One of them cornered me while the other went to fetch a big knife from his room. He said he would kill me. I tried in vain to protect myself. He stabbed me in the shoulder and abdomen.”
One of the victim’s friends said the duo assaulted him after an altercation. “We met them on the ground floor. They were behaving erratically and reeked of alcohol. They verbally harassed my girlfriend.” A police corporal said the defendants were arrested right after the stabbing report was received. The defendants can appeal the court ruling within 15 days from the issuance date.
