818 fined for using mobile phones while driving in Ras Al Khaimah

ras al khaimah — A staggering 818 drivers were fined by the Ras Al Khaimah Police for talking on their mobile phones while at the wheel in the first six months of the year. Most of them were found hampering traffic flow at the signals.

Such a traffic violation draws a fine of Dh800, along with four black points, said Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director-general of the central operations room, RAK Police. “Fines shall also be slapped on those who eat or smoke while driving in a way that obstructs traffic move- ment.”

Traffic offences are closely monitored by advanced cameras across the emirate, he added. “Irrespecti­ve of whether the traffic light is green or not, the motorist is at fault if he is ignoring road safety,

and failing to observe traffic regulation­s.”

“Drivers should rather use hands-free headsets or other alternativ­e smart gadgets to steer clear of traffic violations and potential accidents,” Al Humaidi said.

Failing to fasten seat belts is also one of the main traffic violations detected by the cameras, he said.

The traffic and patrol department of the RAK Police had booked as many as 1,622 drivers and 169 passengers for failing to buckle up in the last six months.

Officers are also entitled to take a picture of the erring driver and share it on the RAK Police smart app, Al Humaidi said.
