marrakesh — Nasser bin Thani Juma Al Hamli, UAE Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, on Monday offered the UAE’s support to a major international framework on migration at the Inter-governmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration, in Marrakesh.
Addressing world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spain Prime Minisiter Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon and UN Secretary-General, the minister affirmed the UAE’s support for the global initiative.
Addressing the gathering Juma Al Hamli said: “As the host of the largest per-capita population of temporary migrants in the world, the UAE is committed to improving migration governance standards in the years ahead. The conference provides a framework for guiding member states in identifying priorities and building international cooperation. It provides global objectives to set best practices, but also allows space for regional variation and national context to play their part.”
The Global Compact meeting is the result of over three years’ work by member states of the United Nations to find a set of common, internationally-recognised principles for countries to apply in their governance of human mobility, including temporary expatriate workers. The compact is non-binding – meaning that it will have no legal force over governments
In his speech, the minister emphasised that the Global Compact must continue to be seen to be state-led and non-binding. He said: “The principles underlying the Global Compact are the basis, we believe, for its ongoing success. Those principles foster trust between governments, which is very important for tackling the crossborder challenges.” —
