Community collects 14.5 tonnes of recyclable waste
fujairah — Some 14.5 tonnes of recyclable waste — which would have otherwise ended up in landfills — has been collected in Fujairah, thanks to the community’s participation in the municipality’s segregation drive.
Taking part in the first phase of the innovative drive, 50 people collected recyclable waste in their areas, a top official of the Fujairah Municipality told Khaleej
They placed the trash in special containers provided by the municipality.
As soon as they completed their collection, they contacted the operations centre through the ‘Think Green’ smart application. Specialised vehicles were promptly sent to pick up the containers, weigh them out, and transport them to Fujairah’s sorting facility in Al Hill area.
The municipality official said the initiative was part of the national sustainability programme that aimed to achieve the goals set for UAE Vision 2021.
Waste disposal in the UAE today is no longer just about throwing garbage at designated dumpsites, he said. Various wastes are now converted into materials that can be used to support the recycling sector.
“Since its launch, the initiative have been encouraging a lot of people to collect recyclable waste, raising awareness of sustainability and environmental protection,” he added.
The municipality is preparing to roll out the second phase that will cover more members of the Fujairah community,.
The Think Green smart application is one of several electronic projects that the municipality has implemented to provide its community with an environment that is clean and green, the official said.
