Memorable win for jockey Whelan in Abu Dhabi

-

abu dhabi — Tafaakhor, ridden by young Irishman Ronan Whelan, won the thoroughbred race, the highlight of the six-race preholiday card, at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday, a press release said.

It was a memorable win for Whelan who had suffered an injury at Meydan in November.

He only returned to the saddle at Meydan last Thursday.

But on Sunday, Whelan guided Tafaakhor to an impressive win in Abu Dhabi, pushing early leader Spring Offensive, ridden by Patrick Cosgrave, to second place.

Strong Challenge, ridden by Connor Beasley, finished third.

“Obviously it is great to get that first winner and to be back in the saddle after a less than ideal start to my local career,” Whelan said after his victory.

“I am very grateful to the whole team at Grandstand Stables both for the opportunity in the first place and their support once I was injured. The team seemed quite bullish about Tafaakhor’s chances and I was able to get a nice position and take my time before he picked up really well close home.”

The best of the Purebred Arabian action was also a 1600m handicap. It produced a thrilling finish with Fabrice Veron and Bainoona taking the top honours.

AF Maher, who had led from the start under Tadhg O’Shea, finished second while Bushrah Al Reef, ridden by Brett Doyle, was third.

Trained by Eric Lemartinel, the 5-year-old mare registered her fifth career victory and third over course and distance. She had also won a 1600m Abu Dhabi handicap on her previous outing.

“She had a low weight today so I was able to ride her,” Veron said. “She won well last time and we — Supplied photo

were pretty hopeful she could follow up which she has done nicely. Mr. Lemartinel and his team

at Al Asayl have the horses in top form and it is always a pleasure to ride.”
