Sewa to save energy by 55% this year
sharjah — The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) is targeting to save energy by 55 per cent during this year by using smart power networks and encouraging the consumers to use LED lights.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of a meeting with South Korean delegation, Dr Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of Sewa, said that the authority has succeeded in saving energy by 35 per cent, especially in peak hour. Now it has extended its goal to save energy by 55 per cent using various methods such as decreasing the consumption of power used in streetlights by expanding smart lighting projects and solar lighting in various areas in the emirate.
He added that currently, Sewa is working on many projects including installation of streetlights in vital areas as part of the emirate’s infrastructure development and strategic plan and a timetable. The project would contribute to lighting the streets without increasing the load of power consumption.
He stressed that Sewa is also working to complete the system of street lighting in the emirate by using LED system. During 2018, the authority installed more than 4,500 lighting poles and replaced 2,643 traditional lights with LED ones.
In addition, some innovative ideas and proposals have been applied to reduce the consumption of streetlights.
He said that the South Korean delegation came to Sewa to discuss participation in research and development projects and to cooperate in upgrading smart energy networks.
