Man assaults cop at police station

dubai — A Russian man denied in court punching, insulting and trying to choke a cop at a Dubai police station. The 28-year-old was brought to the Jebel Ali police station in October for consuming alcohol.

According to police officers’ testimonia­ls, the man was drunk when he was brought to the station with bruises on his face and eyes, caused by a physical fight he had earlier. The accused then assaulted and insulted a 39-year-old officer before attacking him.

prosecutor­s the defendant tried to enter a Dubai Electricit­y and Water Authority (Dewa) station in Jebel Ali. He had a fight with some employees after they refused to let him in.

On reaching the police station, he refused to surrender his belongings. “He started singing when he was in the waiting room and refused to abide by any instructio­ns. He soon walked through the station’s corridors before going into an interrogat­ion room and locking the door,” the policeman said.

Officers found the accused sitting on the floor when they broke into the room.

The policeman who was assaulted testified to prosecutor­s that the accused stood up and shoved him. “He then spat on me and insulted me, before punching me in the face and chest.”

The accused then tried to choke the officer before another officer intervened and dragged him away.
