Test of UAE defenders against India

- Ashwani@khaleejtimes.com

ABU DHABI — Good defence is the best form of attack. And the UAE will need to be solid at the back when they face India in the crucial Group A match of the AFC Asian Cup.

India proved against Thailand what they can do when provided with little space and opportunity. The likes of Sunil Chhetri ran riot, substitute striker Jeje Lalpekhlua scored in no time, Anirudh Thapa and Ashique Kuruniyan tormented the defence. And all of them unitedly ran tirelessly till the very end. The never-say-die-attitude of the ‘Blue Tigers’ spells trouble for the UAE. They will make the opponent pay dearly for any mistake.

UAE’s Fares Juma, who is bedrock of the backline, knows the situation too well. Al Jazira defender understands he can’t commit a costly slip and it has to be united effort.

“We all are focused. Everyone is aware about the importance of the game, its difficulties and the need to win in order to enhance our chances.”

He said the players need to put the 1-1 Bahrain blip in the first match behind them and put a display that will make the UAE proud.

“We are all keen to get back to winning ways. We work hard to achieve the aspirations of the team. India are expected to enjoy the support of their large community in the UAE. We are counting on our fans in this important game.”

Meanwhile, Khamis Esmaeel said the players need to be wary about Indians as they play as a unit.

“We saw in their match against Thailand. They are strong and play in compact way. They have many players who can go on attack. It will be a tough contest but we are ready.”

He said the entire team is determined to win three points and bring smile on faces of fans.

“The fans are the fuel that drives us. We will push hard to win and satisfy their desire,” Esmaeel said.
