dubai — A man, who was allegedly high on drugs when he resisted being taken into custody by a Dubai police officer, stood trial at a Dubai court on Thursday.

The Dubai Court of First Instance heard how the 31-yearold Emirati man physically assaulted the on-duty anti-narcotics police officer while he was under the influence of four types of narcotics on October 8, last year. The incident was reported at Bur Dubai police station.

The man was charged with physically assaulting an on-duty police officer, taking narcotics and possessing drugs for use.

A police sergeant said he was assigned to be part of the force that would arrest the defendant. “Our department was tipped off that he used and possessed drugs. We raided his place after completing the legal procedures.”

The sergeant added that the defendant was then sleeping in his room. “We woke him up and showed him the warrant. We handcuffed him and found drugs with him. He said he wanted to use the toilet but then tried to escape and kicked me.”

The police officers brought the defendant under control and referred him to the antinarcotics department and then for toxicology tests.

Traces of morphine, crystal meth, amphetamine and a medical drug were detected in his urine sample, as per the Dubai police crime lab report.

The same report showed that the quantity seized from the accused was heroin and it weighed 0.49 grammes. The trial has been adjourned to February 21.
