dubai — A watchman, who allegedly sexually harassed a 16-year-old girl and then threatened to disgrace her and her boyfriend in front of their parents, stood trial at a Dubai court on Sunday.

The Court of First Instance was told that the 28-year-old Pakistani man hugged and kissed the teenager on her lips and neck twice. He did not stop there, but threatened to dishonour the victim and her boyfriend.

The incident allegedly took place on March 21 last year in Al Barsha.

The victim, an Indian student, said that she was with her boyfriend around 4.20pm at her house to make preparations for her brother’s birthday party. “We took the stairs as we wanted to go shopping for some stuff. We heard footsteps behind us and I could see it was the watchman. He had been observing us. He said that he was aware we loved each other and that we were about to have sex.”

She told the prosecutor that the man then told her boyfriend to leave him alone with her. “The watchman then put his hand on my shoulder. He said that there was an available room in the building where we can have sex freely,” she said.

The defendant caught her off guard when he hugged and kissed her.

When her friend came back, he took them to a fourth floor

flat. “I went with him as I felt confused and did not know what to do. He locked the door and asked my friend to go to a room and then he kissed and hugged me again. I pushed him away before he could do it one more time and my friend came out yelling and pushing him. He opened the door for us. I felt scared and confused and told my friend not to tell anyone as I wanted to forget about it. But I confided to my mother later after I could not deal any longer with the constant feeling of fear,” she recalled.

During the investigation, the victim’s friend, a 17-yearold Indian student, said that the watchman told them he was aware of what they had been doing and he would report them to their parents. “I saw him hugging and kissing her. She was apparently afraid and would not listen to me when I told her to go back to her flat. I later saw the accused whispering in her ear and kissing her again.”

The girl’s mother said that her daughter told her about the incident only upon her insistence. “I spotted her often crying and she had lost sleep. She said she felt scared to tell me.”

The trial will continue on March 3.
