dubai — Syrian couple Salma and Ghaith are engaged to get married by the end of this year. Being in different countries — Salma is based in Syria while Ghaith is in the UAE — they have had their struggle to make the long-distance relationship work.

This Valentine’s Day, Salma flew from Syria to see Ghaith in Dubai and the city gave them more special moments as they were shortlisted by a social media influencer to get special Valentine’s Day makeover.

As a way of giving back to their customers on a personal level, Al Ghurair Retail Group introduced a customer happiness programme for Valentine’s Day.

The campaign saw the group partnering with prominent influencers from who used their social media handles to select two couples to win exclusive makeovers.

Salma, a medical student based in Syria, would often look for opportunities to visit the UAE to meet Ghaith, a UAE-based electrical engineer.

“I was in Dubai taking a break from my studies to spend time with Ghaith and that is when I came across this contest announced by Emirati beauty and lifestyle blogger Reman Ali, where she asked us a question about certain brands. I answered it many times to win.”

Ali, who randomly selected Salma, said it was a beautiful experience as she got a chance to meet and bond with one of her followers. “Salma had responded to the social media contest more than 15 times and had tagged her fiancé in it. This showed her earnestness to get this makeover done. I met Salma and her fiancé and it was great hearing about their reunion story. We bonded well and as I took Salma and helped her with the makeup and shopping.”

Another popular UAE blogger with over 200,000 followers, Yasmin Yousri, also posted a question on her Instagram and then checked the profile of her followers to see who was the most deserving.

She selected UAE-based Filipino couple, Christine Joyce and Joseph Jed, who has a seven-year-old son. While Christine works as a secretary, her husband Joseph works as an office clerk and due to their busy schedule, the couple hardly gets time to spend with each other.

Talking about how she selected the winning couple, Yousri said: “Christine replied to my post just on the day the contest ended and I happen to check her profile which melted my heart as I saw the couple’s pictures along with their son, highlighting a strong commitment and love for each other.”
