Zarouni steals the show at IWAS World Games

sharjah — The UAE’s Mohammed Al Zarouni won three gold medals in badminton at the IWAS World Games in Sharjah on Thursday, a press release said.

The battle for silver and bronze medals was between Indian and Thailand players.

Haifa Mansour won two gold medals for her home country Syria. Meanwhile, Al Zarouni won his first gold medal in the MS WH2 competitio­n. His second gold came after teaming up with Syrian Haifa Mansour in the XD WH1 – WH2 Exhibition competitio­n. He secured his third gold when he teamed up with Kuwait’s Khalid Yaseen.

“There was fierce competitio­ns in badminton games. I’m excited to have accomplish­ed this feat,” Al Zarouni said.

India’s Parul Parmar teamed up with Thailand’s Samownkorn Photisuppa­iboon and secured the gold medal in the WD SL3 – SU5 Exhibition against the UAE’s Meera Abouhatab and Zainab Mohammed of Bahrain.

In the MS SL3 competitio­n, the gold medal was claimed by India’s Pramod Bhagat. He also won the gold medal in the XD SL 3 – SU 5 category after teaming up with countryman Parul Parmar.

Syrian Haifa Mansour topped the list in the MS WH1 + WS WH1 + WS WH2 competitio­n, beating Kuwaiti Khalid Yaseen, and claimed her first gold medal. Meanwhile in the MS SL 4 + SU5, Indian Sukant Kadam clinched the gold medal. Thailand’s Bunthan Yaemmali competed fiercely and won the Singles SS 6 Exhibition, adding another gold alongside compatriot Samownkorn Photisuppa­iboon who topped the list in the WS SL3 + SL4 + SL5.

Thailand players continued their winning streak when Watcharaph­on Chok-Uthaikul and Prakaithip Chaiwong won the gold medal in the MD SL3SL4 + SUF competitio­n.

In swimming competitio­ns, Thai and Indian swimmers secured top spots. All three medals in the Women’s 100 LC Metre Freestyle category were won by Thai swimmers, with Monruedee Kangpila claiming gold, Prakaithip Chaiwong receiving silver, Panisa Vipod taking bronze.

Estonia’s Susannah Kaul took the top position in the Women’s 100 LC Metre Backstroke competitio­n.

In the men’s competitio­n, the gold medal in the 14-34 100 LC Metre Freestyle competitio­n was claimed by India’s Swapnil Sanjay Patil

And the backstroke competitio­n golds in the category were clinched by Estonia’s Matz Topkin and Kardo Pioompiuu.

Indian swimmer Jagdish Kundu was the fastest in the Men’s 35&O 100 Freestyle competitio­n. Thai swimmers Thirathep Nunkhao and Phuchit Aingcaiyap­hum claimed gold and silver respective­ly in the Men’s 14-34 100 LC Meter Breaststro­ke competitio­n.

Chaiwong finished with silver.

The Men’s 14-34 100 LC Metre Butterfly contest was once again dominated by Thai swimmer Eakapan Songwichea­n with India’s Chetan Giridhar Raut securing second position.

The Women’s 400 LC Metre Freestyle was won by Prakaithip Chaiwong — her third win in the swimming categories. Gold medals in the men’s version of this category were picked by Indian swimmers Suyash Narayan and Swapnil Sanjay Patil. The UAE’s Humaid Almansoori claimed a silver for his nation in this contest.

The Internatio­nal Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games will end on February 16.
