Bridges of cooperatio­n with South Korea are solid: CP

seoul — His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, visited the National Assembly of South Korea headquarte­rs in Yeouido.

Sheikh Mohamed was greeted by Moon Hee-sang, Speaker of the National Assembly, along with a number of members the Korean assembly.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and Moon Hee-sang exchanged friendly talks and discussed bilateral ties between the two friendly countries. They also exchanged views on a number of issues of mutual concern, and discussed means to enhance cooperatio­n in fifth-generation technologi­es and artificial intelligen­ce.

Moon Hee-sang welcomed the visit of Sheikh Mohamed to South Korea. He said: “The UAE is an ideal country that enjoys political stability and openness, and is a leader for peace and stability in the region. The papal visit to the UAE is testament to this, and sends a message of peace from the UAE to the world.”

The National Assembly Speaker expressed his hope that Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s visit to Korea will be a good start for the Korean peninsula, which is awaiting the outcomes of the upcoming North Korea-United States Vietnam Summit. He also said that he hopes that strategic relations between the UAE and Korea will continue to grow, noting that the National Assembly supports existing ties between the two countries.

Moon Hee-sang also highlighte­d the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project, an important symbol of cooperatio­n between the two countries, noting the importance behind the project’s success in the use of peaceful nuclear energy programmes.

He also noted South Korea’s participat­ion in the upcoming Special Olympics World Games 2019 in Abu Dhabi, adding that 150 Paralympia­ns will take part in the games in March. “This is the largest participat­ion by the Korean national team in the Special Olympics,” he said, adding that Korea supports its heroes.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed noted the strategic partnershi­p between the UAE and Korea, adding that his visit to the National Assembly emphasises the institutio­nal nature that brings together bilateral ties, and the UAE’s appreciati­on and admiration of Korean culture, and its innovative progress. He expressed his aspiration­s for relations between the two friendly countries to continue to grow for decades to come.

He also relayed his wishes for the success of the summit between the US President and North Korean President to achieve peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking about peace efforts in the region, Sheikh Mohamed said that the UAE, since its inception, sends a positive message to the world, that there is hope and optimism to establish peace, stability and coexistenc­e in the Middle East. “This was highlighte­d in the historic visit of the Grand Imam of Al Azhar of and the Head of the Catholic Church, signing the Human Fraternity Document, which aims to achieve peace and tolerance between religions,” he added.

Sheikh Mohamed also spoke about relations between the UAE and the Republic of Korea, adding that current bridges of cooperatio­n are solid, and that the UAE always aspires to improve these relations.

He thanked the Speaker for the warm reception, expressing his thanks and appreciati­on for Moon Hee-sang’s support to further develop ties between the two countries. “I am very happy to visit the Korean National Assembly and meet with its leaders. Parliament­ary relations are an important part of our close ties, and are one of the main pathways of collaborat­ion that enrich the common interests of both countries and peoples,” Sheikh Mohamed added.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Executive Committee; Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry; Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education; Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Developmen­t; Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environmen­t; Dr Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State; and other senior officials. —
