New paid parking area in Sharjah

Number of parking meters have been installed to cover 1,130 parking lots

sharjah — The Boulevard in Muweilah commercial area in Sharjah is now a pre-paid public parking zone.

The Sharjah Municipali­ty has installed 22 parking meters to cover 1,130 parking lots which have already started operation since February 25. The parking charges will apply from 8am to 10pm on normal days.

Thabet Salim Al Taraifi, Director-General of Sharjah Municipali­ty, said that the civic body was keen to ensure the availabili­ty of parking spaces for the residents as well as visitors and to prevent misuse of these lots by others. The municipali­ty has installed the necessary payment devices for availing of parking in the area.

He explained that the municipali­ty decided to include Muweilah area in the pre-paid public parking zone as it is witnessing rapid growth and has become a hub for commercial projects.

The visitors and residents have been voicing their grouse about lack of parking space in the area, where shops offering various services, and food outlets have proliferat­ed. The municipali­ty is also keen to ensure convenienc­e for the people by making the parking space available all the time, so that they don’t have to waste time over searching for a place to park their vehicles.

Khalid bin Falah Al Suwaidi, Assistant General Manager for Customer Services at Sharjah Municipali­ty, said that the Department of Public Parking has deployed a special team to monitor all those who misuse the parking spaces and take action against the violators. He added the users can pay for parking through the devices installed by the municipali­ty or text messages round-the-clock.

Ali Abu Gazain, another official, said that the municipali­ty has installed 10 devices on the main road and 12 on the internal road to provide prepaid parking tickets for vehicles in the area. It has also installed 33 signages to direct the motorists to these parking spaces and devices.
