dubai — A man was sentenced to three months in jail by a Dubai court on Thursday for threatening a woman he met on an online site unless she had sex with him and paid him Dh2,000.
The Court of First Instance heard how the 31-year-old Indian salesman introduced himself as a French man when he met the complainant on the social networking site. He denied in court charges of making criminal threats to defame someone and online blackmailing.
The threats took place in October 2018 and a complaint was filed at Bur Dubai police station.
The complainant, a 39-year-old Filipina saleswoman, said she met the defendant on Wechat. “He pretended he is a French citizen. I sent him my photo and a video of me naked taking shower.”
She recounted how their relation became close and she told him that she was looking for a job. “He told me he would send me his secretary’s number to send her my resume. I sent it on WhatsApp to the number he gave me but then the receiver told me about his desire to have sex with me. I rebuffed him telling him that I was having an affair with his boss,” she said.
On November 3, the accused told her that the Indian and the French guys are the same person. He said he lied to her and insisted to have sex with her but she kept pushing him away. “He then demanded Dh2,000, threatening that he would circulate my video if I did not pay him the cash,” she told the prosecutor.
The defendant was arrested by the CID officers on November 6. Copies of WhatsApp conversations were used as public prosecution evidence.
The accused has the right to appeal the ruling within 15 days.
