Warning sign boards are already there, but some people, mostly young men, turn blind eyes to such life-saving directives.”

umm al quwain — An Asian man in his twenties drowned at the Umm Al Quwain Creek on Friday.

Col Mohammed Bu Haroun, chief of the city police station, UAQ Police, said that when alerted about the incident, a national ambulance, rescue teams and paramedics were dispatched to the reported site. “The victim could not make it and was already dead before the rescue teams found him.”

Police investigations showed the victim was swimming along with three friends. “All his friends managed to swim back to the shore but the man failed to do so due to the strong wind, high waves, and rough sea.”

The trio tried to get hold of their friend, but they could not see him, he explained. “They alerted the UAQ Police immediately.”

The city police, in collaboration with the creek’s security and coast guards, scanned the beach, but could not locate the victim, he stated. “Later, with the help of divers from the UAE rescue team, the corpse was found and shifted to the morgue.”

Col Haroun urged all beachgoers not to go swimming at night. “Swimming with low visibility makes it harder for rescuers to extend help, particularly when the sea is rough.”
