umm al quwain — The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) has started distributing power to lampposts in Umm Al Quwain.

Lampposts on the Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Mualla Road leading to the Etihad Road have already been lit, according to sources. Other target areas include Al Qarayen residential area; Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road at Al Salma area; and December 2 Road leading to Al Salma Bridge.

Residents in the emirate have been requesting Fewa to supply power to these light poles for a long time. “We have been asking Fewa for over nine years,” said Abdullah Al Ali, an Emirati citizen.

These street poles were installed long ago, but were not lit, said Mohammed Hassan, another Emirati citizen.

Ahmed Ashraf, an Egyptian resident, said recent traffic accidents — mostly run-overs — were blamed on lack of lights on these roads, mainly in Al Salma area.

Mahmoud Rashid, an Emirati citizen, said cables have been connected to all lampposts. “However, they have not be powered with electricity. Stray animals are frequently spotted on these roads and cause danger to road users.”

Ali Saeed, another Emirati, said the December 2 Road is one of the key routes in the emirate. “It leads to the Al Salma Bridge, but lacks enough light.”

“They have begun the supply of electricity to the lampposts on roads. This will reduce traffic accidents,” said a relieved Ibrahim Saleh, another citizen.
