Tech has to ‘make sense’
dubai — The next generation of mobile form factors, foldables, has certainly been making headlines, but manufacturers need to take several factors into consideration before offering such products.
“We’re focused on democratising innovation, making it reasonable for everyone,” Christophe Corsi, regional director of TCL Communication, told Khaleej Times in an interview. “The idea here is how we can make a lot of specs — high memory, processors, biometrics and others — more interesting for consumers at all price points.”
Corsi was speaking following TCL’s appearance at the recent Mobile World Congress, and their showpiece was what it calls the DragonHinge, which is the underlying technology for their own foldables.
The Alcatel brand, which, along with BlackBerry and Palm are made by TCL, flaunted several foldable devices — from one with a single screen that closes like a book to another that has two displays outside and one inside, and another reminiscent of flip phones from the old days — at the MWC. They were, however, still at the concept stages, signalling that the company isn’t exactly in a hurry to launch these into the market just yet.
“It’s a marvel of technology,” Corsi said. “We won’t be the first, but our goal is to be able to bring something to the market that makes sense.”
The reality of today’s consumers,
You don’t have to pay that much to get a very good quality product Christophe Corsi, regional director of TCL Communication
he added, is that they spend more time with their device wherever they may be, thanks to content that can be accessed anywhere. The idea of foldable devices, therefore, is to give more footprint to look at content for a more pleasurable experience.
But it isn’t just the foldable tech that matters. Corsi gives three important factors to make it work out: the innovation behind foldability; the ecosystem, in which how apps should react and adapt to the screen size that will be used by the user on the device; and, of course, price points.
TCL also unveiled its new Alcatel 3 and 1 series and BlackBerry Key2 RED edition at the MWC. And, as always, the company is keeping its prices very attractive for users.
“Tech-savvy persons are not just after expensive products anymore; it’s all about experience and quality,” Corsi said. “You don’t have to pay much to get a very good quality product.”
