In real life, heroes don’t wear capes. They are just at the right place and at the right time, and are quick to act on their feet to save someone’s life.

Syrian expat Mohammed Anas Oraibi did just that. He was in the balcony of his flat in Ajman when he spotted a three-year-old Arab child dangling precariously from the railing of a seventh-floor window in the building opposite his. The toddler was crying and screaming and was trying to climb back up, but no one seemed to notice.

With no moment to lose, Mohammed ran to the building, located the flat and knocked on the door. When a maid opened it, Mohammed did not even bother explaining why he was there and immediately rushed to the window to rescue the boy.

Mohammed, who is in his early 30s, said: “When I saw the child dangling from that window, I didn’t waste time thinking. My conscience and instinct led me to the right flat.”

For his quick action and strong presence of mind, the Ajman Police awarded him hailed him a hero.

Khaleej Times readers also praised him. Abdul Razack said: “You are a one real hero. Really, I am proud of you my friend.”

Another KT reader, meanwhile, gave parents and building management a piece of advice: “Balcony railings should be mandatory, around four and a half feet with sliding door above,” said Iqbal.

Bending the law of nature also has its benefits. In the case of the UAE, which is a dry and desert country, any additional amount of rain is always welcome.

NCM staff work 24/7 to look for each cloud formation and see if it is suitable for cloud seeding. This process has contributed to increasing the amount of rainfall by 15-25 per cent, experts say.

The NCM will continue its missions even during the summer months to try and induce rains.
