HOW AUTHORITIES MONITOR CONSTRUCTION WASTES
What is construction and demolition waste?
This kind of waste is produced during infrastructure projects, as well as during demolishing existing bodies, such as buildings and roads.
Construction and demolition waste materials
> Concrete
> Wood (from buildings)
> Asphalt (from roads and roofing shingles)
> Gypsum (the main component of drywall)
> Metals
> Bricks
> Glass
> Plastics
> Salvaged building components (doors, windows, and plumbing fixtures)
> Trees, stumps, earth, and rock from clearing sites > 210 offences were issued by the Abu Dhabi Municipality against construction companies and contractors for failing to comply with the municipality’s regulations which included improper dumping of construction waste
> 864kg of waste was removed by the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi during a four-hour-clean-up last year at the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. Most of the litter was construction waste, plastic and glass from a nearby labour camp
> The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment issued a resolution this year on using recycled components from construction and demolition waste for road construction and infrastructure projects (applicable to public and private sector).
> More construction and waste demolition recycling facilities open up in the UAE. Tadweer opened one in the Al Dhafra Region last year.
Global construction trash
The amount of construction waste generated globally each year is set to double to 2.2billion tonnes by 2025, according to a report by Transparency Market Research. The waste will be produced mainly by excavation, roadwork and demolition. It’ll produce waste materials such as plastics, metal, ceramic, cardboard, wood, shingles, asphalt, concrete and gypsum.
