dubai — Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber has said that this year’s Davis Cup could be his last and he has also set his sights on the Tokyo Olympics.

Kohlschreiber, at 36, is one of the veterans on the ATP Tour and the world No.80 said that it has always been an honour to represent his country. “Yes,” Kohlschreiber replied on Monday, when asked whether he was thinking of playing in the Davis Cup.

“It’s always nice to play for your country. I mean, I want to be always honest. I asked not to play because my ranking is bad. The Olympics let’s say it’s the main goal for this year. If I have the chance, it’s going to be my last Olympic Games,” he added.

Kohlschreiber revealed that he had a different event pencilled in but the country’s call was too hard to refuse. “I wanted to play somewhere else. Yeah, they asked me to come so I had to consider it a second time. Like I said, it’s always an honour to play for the country. But sometimes it will also help that you could do maybe your own plannings,” said Kohlschreiber, whose best showing at a Grand Slam is when he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2012.

And Kohlschreiber is hoping that Germany can make it all the way to Madrid. The Davis Cup finals will be held at La Caja Magica in Madrid, Spain from November 23 to 29. Germany take on Belarus in their opening round at the Castello Dusseldorf in Germany on March 6 and 7. “That’s the goal,” Kohlschreiber said on reaching the finals.
