Ensure goods transport, PM asks Rangers
islamabad — The federal cabinet has decided to immediately restore food and goods transport in the country to ensure uninterrupted food supply to save poor segments of society from hunger and unemployment.
Special assistant to the prime minister on information and broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told media on Tuesday that Prime Minister Imran expressed displeasure over delay in the implementation of the National Coordination Committee’s (NCC) decision of restoring goods transport so that the supply of the daily-use items was not affected.
The Sindh government, she said, had not fully implemented the NCC decision as all imported items were stuck at Karachi’s ports where sufficient labour force was not available to handle them due to the lockdown.
The prime minister directed the Sindh
Rangers to remove hurdles in the movement of goods transport immediately and restore the supply of edible items, she added.
Awan said the cabinet also expressed its dismay over political point-scoring by leader of the opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif at this critical juncture. She urged the opposition to avoid politicising the current situation and join hands with the government in its endeavour to contain the coronavirus.
Dr Awan said the prime minister briefed the cabinet on the two-pronged strategy of saving the people from the spread of coronavirus and at the same time saving the country’s economy from its negative impacts, besides taking steps to revive construction and other industries, which provided employment to a large number of people. —
